We just shipped something we've been wanting to build for a while — real-time weather and typhoon alerts on brgy.to.
Live Weather on Every Page
You'll now see current weather conditions on province and barangay pages:
- Province pages show a compact weather display right in the header — temperature, conditions, and an icon at a glance.
- Barangay pages show a detailed weather card in the sidebar with temperature, "feels like," humidity, and wind speed.
Weather data comes from OpenWeather and is specific to each municipality's coordinates. So if you're looking at a barangay in Tabaco, you'll see Tabaco's weather — not Legazpi's.
The data refreshes every 30 minutes and is cached so the site stays fast.
Typhoon Alert Banners
When PAGASA raises wind signals for an approaching storm, brgy.to will automatically show an alert banner at the top of the page.
Here's how it works:
- Homepage — Shows a full banner with the storm name, category, and a scrolling list of all affected provinces by signal level.
- Province pages — If your province is under a wind signal, you'll see a targeted alert with the signal level raised over your area.
- Barangay pages — Same province-level alert so residents know immediately.
The banner color changes based on severity:
- Signal 1-2: Amber/yellow
- Signal 3: Orange
- Signal 4-5: Red
The alert links directly to the official PAGASA Severe Weather Bulletin so you can get the full details. You can dismiss the banner if you've already seen it — it won't come back until you open a new browser session.
The typhoon data is scraped from PAGASA's official bulletin page and checked every hour.
Why This Matters
The Philippines gets hit by an average of 20 typhoons per year. When a storm is approaching, people need to know quickly — especially at the barangay level.
We built this so that anyone checking brgy.to for barangay information will also see if there's an active weather threat in their area. No need to go to a separate weather app or dig through PAGASA's website.
What's Next
This is our first version. We're planning to:
- Add rainfall advisories and flood warnings
- Show historical typhoon data per province
- Send push notifications for new typhoon alerts (once we add PWA support)
If you have feedback or suggestions, email us at hello@brgy.to.
Stay safe, everyone!
